Facilities
Overview
Proposals prepared by consulting
architect Gilfillan Callahan Architects
Superintendent Jim Rydland directed
a comprehensive audit of facilities
needs as part of his first-year analysis
of the entire school system. All 20
district buildings, some more than
a century old, have been thoroughly
examined. Auditors discovered a host
of needs ranging from masonry cracks,
roof leaks, clogged drains, rusted
doors, and crumbling asphalt on the
outside, to flooded rooms, inadequate
ventilation, poor lighting, cracked
tile, ripped carpet, and outdated equipment
on the inside.
Some of the most urgent problems will
be fixed during the summer of 2006 from designated
life-safety bonds, but most of the
issues remain. However, before committing
to these extensive repairs and renovations,
the district must decide on the appropriateness
and cost effectiveness of educating
many of our children in outdated, aging
structures that fail to equal more
modern schools in our district.
